Tabula

Tabula home page reading Who gets public money, and who runs it, with a search bar, record counts and browse-by-type cards for charities, organisations, government, articles and initiatives

Search charities, organisations and government programmes to uncover taxpayer funding and government contracts, alongside trustees and history.

  • Who gets public money, and who runs it. Tabula makes government records easier to reach and easier to read, so anyone can learn how charities, organisations and public bodies are funded and operated.
  • Verified against the official record. Every record Tabula keeps is checked against its corresponding entry on the government website, and each record states its source, so you can follow it back to the original.
  • Funding, laid out plainly. Total income by year, government funding by year and a five-year taxpayer funding total for each charity, drawn from Charity Commission public records.
  • Browse by type or purpose. Filter by charitable purpose such as education, relief of poverty or housing, or jump straight to a charity by name or registration number.
  • More record types to come. Organisations, articles and initiatives are being added, linked to the same underlying records.

Privacy policy

This website does not collect any personal information, local device information, background information or anything else, from the moment you open it to the moment you leave.

The only data that is used is public data made available under the Open Government Licence, such as the register of charities, served to the website from a database operated by Civitas Network.

Data Not Collected

Data Not Collected

Tabula collects no data, so nothing is used to track you, nothing is linked to your identity and nothing is collected anonymously either.

  • Data Used to Track You None No advertising or analytics identifiers, no third-party tracking.
  • Data Linked to You None No account, no contact details, no location, no identifiers.
  • Data Not Linked to You None No usage data, diagnostics or crash reports, even anonymised.

This label summarises the Tabula website's data practices and is kept in sync with the policy below.

1. Who we are

Tabula is developed and published by Civitas Network ("we", "us"). This policy explains what information Tabula does and does not handle.

2. Information we collect

None. Tabula does not collect, store, transmit or sell any personal data. In particular, the website does not collect:

  • names, email addresses, phone numbers or other contact details;
  • your location, precise or approximate — the website never requests location permission;
  • search queries, records viewed, filters applied or any other usage data;
  • device identifiers, advertising identifiers or crash reports (the transient handling of your IP address needed to serve a request is described in section 4);
  • contacts, photos, files or any other content stored on your device.

3. The data the website contains

Tabula's records are drawn from public datasets, such as the Charity Commission for England and Wales register, published under the Open Government License. Other data points include websites detailing initiatives, government articles and other hyperlinked resources.

3.1 Trustees and other named individuals

Tabula does not profile trustees. "Profiling" here means the automated or manual combination of separate data sources to evaluate, infer or predict personal attributes of an individual, within the meaning of Article 4(4) UK GDPR. Tabula performs no such processing. It reproduces, without alteration, enrichment or cross‑referencing, only those details the Charity Commission for England and Wales publishes in the public register of charities pursuant to its statutory duty under the Charities Act 2011: the trustee's registered name, the charities of which they are a registered trustee, and the dates of appointment. It does not combine these with any other dataset, and it adds no commentary, scoring, ranking or categorisation.

This information is relayed under the Open Government Licence v3.0 on the lawful basis of legitimate interests (Article 6(1)(f) UK GDPR), namely public transparency as to the funding and governance of registered charities. The Charity Commission remains the controller of the public register; Tabula holds no master copy and its data is refreshed from the published register.

4. How the website works

Tabula does not store its dataset on your device. The records of charities, organisations, government programmes and related resources displayed on the website are held in a remote database operated by Civitas Network and hosted with a third-party cloud infrastructure provider acting as our processor under Article 28 UK GDPR. When you search for or open a record, your browser transmits a request to that database and displays the result returned.

In the course of serving a request, our infrastructure necessarily and transiently processes the technical data inherent in any internet connection, namely your device's IP address and the content of the query. This processing is limited to what is strictly necessary to return the requested record (Article 6(1)(b) and 6(1)(f) UK GDPR) and is not retained: Civitas Network keeps no server logs, does not record IP addresses or search terms, and does not associate any request with any device or individual. No request data is used for analytics, profiling, advertising or any secondary purpose, and none is disclosed to any third party other than the processor whose infrastructure carries the connection.

5. Third-party services

The Tabula website contains no third-party analytics, advertising or tracking software and sets no tracking cookies. The only third party involved is the cloud infrastructure provider that hosts our database, acting as our processor under Article 28 UK GDPR as described in section 4.

6. Data stored in your browser

Tabula stores no record data and no personal data in your browser. Any basic interface preferences are kept in your browser's local storage, never leave your device and are removed when you clear your browser data.

7. Children

Tabula collects no personal information from anyone, including children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your jurisdiction). The website contains published public records only.

8. Your rights

Because we hold no personal data about you, there is nothing for us to access, correct, port or delete. If you are named in a public record shown in Tabula and believe it is inaccurate, the correction should be made with the publishing body (for example the Charity Commission), from which Tabula's copy is refreshed.

9. Changes to this policy

If Tabula ever changes how it handles data, we will update this page before that change takes effect and change the date above. This page, civitas-network.com/projects/tabula#privacy, is the canonical copy of the Tabula privacy policy.
